What is love?

Love is timeless and unconditional. We hear that all the time, though, don’t we? It’s in all the famous books and movies. But what does it really mean–truly?

I’ll tell you what it means, and it really is very simple to grasp.

It means exactly what it says. All you have to do is think about it.

Love is timeless. Love is unconditional.

Love is not bound by time. There are no conditions when it comes to love.

To help you understand this a bit better, I’ll tell you what love is commonly confused as being but isn’t.

Love ISN’T easily angered. Love is not selfish. Love is not envious or boastful. Love does not hold grudges. And love ISN’T kisses and flowers and hand-holding and romance–love ISN’T fireworks. That is just a bonus to love. BONUS. Kisses and flowers and blahblahblah is great to have. Wonderful, even. But fireworks is not the definition of love.

Because love is not ONLY timeless and unconditional. Love is sacrificial. Love is about compromise. Love is patience. Love protects and trusts and hopes. Love perseveres. Love is about putting others’ needs before yours.

“Love never fails.”

Love is patient and kind; love does not envy or boast; it is not arrogant or rude. It does not insist on its own way; it is not irritable or resentful;  it does not rejoice at wrongdoing, but rejoices with the truth. Love bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.  Love never ends. ~1 Corinthians 13:4-8

  1. I think too many people equate feelings and emotions as the corpus of love. Jesus said “There is no greater love than this that a man lay down his life for his friends.” Not “that he feel like laying down his life for his friends” or “that he want to lay down his life for his friends,” just that he do it. Emotions are a part of love, but they’re like the gold filigree that can get worn off. Real love is in actions, devotion, and choices. ❤
